Keep Your Focus in the Now

As the last rays of sunset filtered through the grapevines one autumn day, I paused to refill my energy by savoring the golden light. When I drop into a moment of pure presence, it is as if my sons sense this and seek me out. I had just closed my eyes and turned my face toward the sun when my oldest son poked his head out the back door.

“Hey, Mom, want to have a popsicle with me?”

“No thanks on the popsicle, but I will enjoy your company if you want to sit with me.”

“Would you rather have an ice cream bar?” he asked.

“Sure, an ice cream bar sounds good. Let’s share one.”

He disappeared, but a moment later, popped his head back out. “Are you sure you don’t want a popsicle?”

I opened my eyes and looked at him. My inner peace was dissipating with these interruptions, but I sensed a teaching moment. I paused from my own point of stillness to see him.

“Honey, what do you really want?” I asked.

He began an elaborate dialogue about how many popsicles and ice cream bars there were, and how they might be divided if his brothers were to return home from their walk and have a treat too. In a less-centered moment, I might have been pulled off track by the chattering, but instead, I stopped him:

“Honey, what do you really want right now, in this moment?”

“A popsicle,” he answered without hesitation.

“There you go. Keep your focus in the now—decide what you want right now and go from that place.”

He was talking about a popsicle, but this simple formula of focusing in the now is helpful for making decisions in life, avoiding distractions, and staying clear about true desires. Several hours later, when one of his brothers was trying to decide about the dessert options and how they might be divided up over the next day or two, I heard my oldest say, “Keep your focus in the now.”

Staying focused on the present sounds simple, but there are reasons it is challenging to keep your attention in this central place. It may require a shift in how you embody your energy field, as the next story illustrates.

Energy Session: Tending the Fire Within

Catherine came for an energy session as she was preparing to retire from her corporate career. Rather than looking forward to it, she found the thought of more free time disconcerting. Catherine recognized her attachment to the busyness of her life; with a self-described tendency to overextend herself at work, she was also the nurturer and problem solver for her family of origin and her grown children. Likewise, she fulfilled a caregiving role in her partnership and often with friends, routinely valuing what she could give more than receive. She took pride in not needing much for herself. Even if she did something she enjoyed, like gardening, she took on a large project and worked until she reached exhaustion. And she was feeling exhausted more frequently. As she
